At a recent FCC hearing in Los Angeles, which I watched via CSPAN, many critics of the trend spoke passionately about the need to limit the amount of stations one company can own in a given market.
This week I got an email from a group I keep tabs on because they are active in my community, Citizens for a Sound Economy. CSE painted the consolidation process in a completely different light.
I think this shows a major problem with today's spin cycle.
The people who spoke at the hearing were the real deal, folks who live and breath various segments of the industry. CSE rhetoric seems weak in light of the passion I saw via the hearings.
We all should educate ourselves about this issue. I worked for a company whose number one goal is to be able to converge media platforms. The trend is real.
If we didn't have WFMY, FOX-8 and GNR competing in this market, what would the quality of our coverage in this region be?
